The Greenacres Woodward Community Radio Patrol has been protecting our neighborhood since 1987 through the dedication of resident volunteers committed to keeping our community safe. The Patrol was formed in response to a growing crime problem. In 1986, 130 of Greenacres' approximately 1,000 homes were victims of home invasions. Within the first year of the Radio Patrol's operation, that number dropped to just 39 burglaries, a remarkable 70% reduction. Greenacres did not become the safe, welcoming neighborhood it is today by chance. It is the result of neighbors working together, watching out for one another, and investing their time to protect the community. That tradition continues today, and you can be part of it.

 

Become a Volunteer

 

Joining the Greenacres Woodward Community Radio Patrol is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference while connecting with your neighbors.Members are asked to volunteer once each month or as much as they are able. Volunteers who contribute more than 37 hours annually earn membership in the 37+ Club and are recognized at our Annual Awards Ceremony for their outstanding commitment to the community. In addition to serving the neighborhood, members enjoy community events like our annual Holiday Party and Summer Cookout.

 

How the Patrol Works

 

The Radio Patrol operates in partnership with the Detroit Police Department under City of Detroit Ordinance No. 37-95 and is incorporated as a State of Michigan nonprofit membership corporation. For the safety of both our volunteers and the community, all applicants complete a screening through the Detroit Police Department before joining. Patrols are organized into teams based on the day of the week, each led by a Team Leader. While volunteers are assigned to a weekday team, we understand that schedules change, and members are welcome to patrol on different days when needed. Every patrol consists of three volunteers working together:

• Driver – Safely operates the patrol vehicle throughout the neighborhood.

• Observer – Monitors activity, maintains communication, and watches for anything unusual.

• Base Operator – Serves as contact for patrollers for those who operate best from home.

 

Working as a team allows volunteers to patrol effectively while maintaining a safe and supportive environment.
